Birding On Mt. Hood

Bird watching near the Mt. Hood area is a top activity in our area. The Mt. Hood National Forest is the perfect environment to find many species. If you’re a bird watcher and visiting Welches or Government Camp you might want to check out these local Mt. Hood area birding areas. These four locations are listed as top spots to watch birds:

The Wildwood Recreation Area is just a couple of miles West of Welches. This is a wonderful BLM part with the Salmon River running through the woods.

Lost Creek Campground and Old Maid Flats located up LoLo Pass Road near Rhododendron.

Timberline Lodge, located at nearly 6,000 feet and only six miles up the mountain from Government Camp.

Trillium Lake just past Government Camp in the Mt. Hood National Forest is a scenic lake filled with birds and mountain wildlife. This lake is a favorite of locals.

The Auduban Society of Portland recommends this spot: Bonney Butte, located on the Southeast slope of Mt. Hood in the Mt. Hood National Forest. HawkWatch International runs a migratory raptor observation site on an open bluff at an elevation of over 1700 feet.
